El pueblo

When you slaughtered a pig it smelled good for a mile around, not like today when pigs are fattened on artificial foods and garbage and stuff of that sort. Then they were fattened on figs, sweet potatoes, groundnuts, green stuff and they tasted delicious.

María Ávila, quoted in The Pueblo: A Mountain Village on the Costa del Sol by Ronald Fraser, who says in his introduction:

If the land filled a man's stomach, which it did not always do, it seemed not to fill his heart. Tajeños lacked the ponderous solidity of peasants, the almost mystical northern devotion to land. They were light of foot and quick of mind. Theirs was the world of the town and they looked on the land as little more than an inevitable, though regrettable, means of keeping alive.

Fraser spent some months in the village of Tajos, above Málaga, in 1957.

Me has dejado boquiabierto.

Boquiabierto : Muy sorprendido

Un saludo
